My Family

MY FAMILY

IF PEOPLE WERE PLACES my family would be Mt Everest.

The sherpas would be Mum and Dad guiding our occasionally rebellious and stubborn children by setting reasonable boundaries and leading by example.

The mountain climbers would be our determined children who would strive to achieve the greatest in climbing the slippery slopes of life.

Crevasses are the pitfalls that we all as a family have encountered at some stage in our lives, but have eventually climbed out of.

The ropes holding the climbers together are the bonds that exist in our family that have enabled us all to make this upward journey.

Unfortunately, sometimes the freezing ice, snow and cold winds leads to the death of our ambitions by taking away our self confidence.

However, the stronger climbers are my family who have reached the summit by perseverance, hard work and a positive attitude.

Then the summit is conquered the view is amazing. The world is now at your feet.

As you have all reached the summit nothing can take that away from you.

I have unconditional love for all of you.

An original poem by Sally Smith

This is dedicated to Mark and the children in Room 5 at Kaurilands School for giving me inspiration and confidence to try my hand at writing creatively.  Mark, you are a legend. I wish you had been my teacher when I was a keen young 10 year old at primary school.

  1. Welcome to the world of blogging!
That’s a touching and creative poem, though rather unconvential, almost halfway between prose and poetry. This Mark must be a good creative writing teacher.
Looking forward to reading your future entries.

  2. Mark is a fabulous teacher. His strength is certainly his ability to involve a whole class in writing creatively. He also involves me in this process which really boosts my self confidence. He quite often asks my opinion on the use of certain words. Tomorrow he will be modelling a completely different genre of poem which I am looking forward to. The kids just love him.

  3. Sally, that is an absolutely wonderful poem, I am very proud of you for writing this and presenting it in this manner. I completely agree with the sentiment expressed in your writing and like you, I have a deep love for all members of our family.

  4. That is an amazing piece of writing, the descriptions are wonderful, the analogies, and the sentiment, i enjoyed reading this.

  5. nice – don’t forgot to mention that the wind whistling between the rocks is the loud complaints of the stinky toddlers who don’t want to eat their peas (not thinking of anyone in particular…)
